Body contouring is a medical procedure suggested by doctors as a last resort for individuals suffering from high levels of obesity. The body contouring surgical procedure has been considered a form of cosmetic surgery; however, it is focused primarily on individuals who are looking to achieve extreme weight loss with a permanent removal of the weight. The procedure is highly beneficial as it can help improve the individual’s body regaining physical, and in many cases psychological, health. Unfortunately, as with all procedures there are several side effects that need to be considered. This article will look at those side effects in more detail.
What Is Body Contouring?
Body contouring is a surgical procedure used to remove extreme amounts of excess weight from an individual. The procedure shapes or contours the body with the doctor removing fat from the abdomen, thighs and hips.
What Are The Side Effects Of Body Contouring?
1. Bruising And Swelling
Arguably the most common type of body contouring side effect is bruising and swelling. Due to the fact that a significant amount of fat is removed from different areas of the body, the body will respond with signs of bruising and swelling. This is not a permanent effect and not necessarily a dangerous one as it often disappears after a few days; however, there are cases where the symptoms have not been reduced and the bruising becomes increasingly itchy.
2. Increased Risk of Infection
After experiencing such a large removal of fat, the large wounds do present an increased risk of infection if they do not heal property. If the patient suffers from any skin conditions during the healing period, it is highly possible that infections can be experienced delaying the process of healing. Allergic reactions to dressings and solutions may also cause infections; therefore, post-surgical care is essential to prevent any risk of infections. Treatment for this possible side effect can be completed with the use of antibiotics.
3. Excess Fluid
As a part of this condition, it is often seen that excess fluid or seroma will be trapped in the body and begins to accumulate. The fluid can easily be drained from the body using tubes removing the side effect; however, the amount of fluid will determine how much draining will need to take place. In more severe cases, the excess fluid may be present in various parts of the body and tubes will need to be placed inside for several weeks.
4. Risks Related To Anesthesia
One side effect that some patients may experience is the sensation of nausea which is a common reaction to anesthesia. This is not always too dangerous; however, it is important to be aware of any other risks as adverse reactions to anesthesia can be life-threatening.
5. Soreness, Scarring And Changes In Sensation
Due to the fact that large amounts of skin and tissue are removed, there is a common feeling of soreness across the treated areas. This sensation should pass; however, if the sensation remains it may be evidence of infection or adverse reactions. Scarring is another common side effect and one must be aware of the permanent scarring in areas across the body. A competent surgeon will try to keep the scars as inconspicuous as possible.
